Pixar’s Onward Cinnamon Twist Wizard Staff

Pixar’s Onward Cinnamon Twist Wizard Staff

In honor of Pixar’s upcoming release Onward, I made these fun cinnamon twist snacks inspired by the wizard staff from the movie, and wanted to share this easy treat to celebrate!

To make these twists, I used:

  • Puff pastry sheets

  • Cinnamon sugar (I had this in our pantry because I love cinnamon toast - I start with 1/2 cup sugar and mix in cinnamon to taste, though I’m sure there are exact recipes floating around somewhere!)

  • Water

To bake the twists, I followed the instructions on the box of puff pastry - in this brand’s case, I preheated the oven to 400°F and cooked the twists for 15 minutes once ready.

I didn’t capture the greatest process shots (and full disclosure that the first twist I made that I did take more photos of came out poorly…) so hopefully my edits to this photo make sense! I cut the pastry sheet into 3rds along the perforations, giving me 3 smaller “sheets” to work with. Then I cut the new “sheet” down the middle, stopping before I got all the way to the end, creating a ‘V’ shape. After that I cut an inch or two into the ends of each tail.

To prevent cracking (and to help the cinnamon sugar stick) I lightly brushed the dough with water. Next, I twisted the dough together until I got to the bits I had cut through at the end.

To help create the general shape of the staff, I used toothpicks to hold the 4 tails apart from each other while baking. This was definitely the trickiest part, to get the toothpicks to hold up the weight of the dough, and required a bit of adjusting to get the angles correct. Once baked, I just carefully pulled the toothpicks out of the puffed pastry, making sure not to break off any of the ends!

While the shape took a bit of practice, the treat itself is only a few ingredients and really easy to whip up. Let me know if you end up trying to make your own, and if you’re going to go see Onward! And I would love to know your non-spoiler thoughts if you’ve already seen it! I’m thinking I might finally try one of the “Mommy & Me” screenings one of the theater chains here does so that Katie and I can see it soon.
